Each November, we observe National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month - a time to honor individuals living with Alzheimer’s and to support the families and caregivers who walk beside them every day. Declared by President Ronald Reagan in 1983, this month shines a light on a condition that affects more than 6 million Americans, reminding us of the importance of compassion, education, and planning ahead.
Understanding Alzheimer’s
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, gradually impacting memory, reasoning, and daily functioning. While it can be a difficult diagnosis, early awareness allows families to make thoughtful decisions about care, support, and living arrangements that ensure safety, comfort, and dignity.
The Importance of Planning Ahead
For many families, an Alzheimer’s diagnosis brings questions about the future—especially when it comes to housing and lifestyle needs. Some individuals may wish to downsize to a more manageable home, move closer to family, or transition into a supportive senior living environment. Planning these changes early can help reduce stress later and make the process more positive for everyone involved.
Supporting Caregivers
November is also National Family Caregivers Month, recognizing the millions of people who provide care for loved ones with Alzheimer’s and other age-related conditions. Caregivers often carry a heavy emotional and physical load, and having professional guidance—whether from healthcare providers, senior advisors, or real estate professionals—can make a meaningful difference.
